Patient Guide to Colonoscopy

A colonoscopy is a procedure used to examine the large bowel. This page provides general information about the process, preparation, and what to expect.

A colonoscopy allows a specialist to examine the lining of the colon using a flexible camera. It is used to investigate symptoms, screen for bowel cancer, and monitor existing conditions.

Your GP may recommend a colonoscopy if you have:

  • Positive bowel screening test (FIT/iFOBT)
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Change in bowel habits
  • Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Abdominal symptoms
  • Family history of bowel cancer

Direct Colonoscopy allows suitable patients to proceed directly to colonoscopy following GP referral, without requiring a prior specialist consultation.

We help you to find the closest and earliest available participating Gap/No Gap specialist and suitable private hospital procedure location across Australia.

Preparation is essential for a safe and effective colonoscopy.

You will receive:

  • Bowel preparation instructions
  • Dietary guidance
  • Information about medications
  • Consent information
  • The procedure is performed under sedation anaesthesia
  • It usually takes on average 40 minutes
  • You will need someone to accompany you home. You cannot drive for 24 hours.
  • A report will be sent to your GP
  • Follow-up may be arranged if needed

Colonoscopy is generally safe, but risks can include:

  • Bleeding
  • Perforation (rare) – injury to the gastrointestinal tract
  • Reactions to sedation

Your healthcare team will discuss risks with you prior to the procedure.

Our specialists also offer direct access upper endoscopy or gastroscopy procedures, and other endoscopy procedures such as endoscopic ultrasound (EUS).

Once you provide your GP referral and select your preferred specialist, the specialist will assess your referral directly. If eligible, you will be notified and booking instructions will be provided.

More complex procedures may require initial consultation with the specialist to discuss your condition and the procedure.
