Colonoscopy Eligibility

Not all patients are suitable for direct access colonoscopy. This page outlines general guidance on who may be appropriate for this pathway.

  • A positive bowel screening test (FIT/iFOBT)
  • Rectal bleeding
  • Change in bowel habits
  • Iron deficiency anaemia
  • Family history requiring surveillance
  • A GP referral for colonoscopy
  • Significant heart or lung disease
  • Complex medical history
  • Previous bowel surgery
  • High anaesthetic risk
  • Use of certain medications (e.g. anticoagulants)

Direct access colonoscopy is designed for appropriate patients to safely proceed without a prior consultation.

Each referral is reviewed to ensure:

  • patient safety
  • appropriate preparation
  • correct clinical pathway
  1. Your referral is reviewed
  2. Suitability is assessed
  3. You are contacted with next steps
  4. If needed, a specialist consultation is arranged

If you are unsure, we recommend:

  • speaking with your GP
  • contacting our team for guidance
